Secure Document Access with Aadhaar Biometric Authentication

DigiLocker is developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the Digital India initiative to store individuals' documents digitally. Citizens can access official documents like driving licences, vehicle registration certificates, mark sheets, insurance policies and Aadhaar cards from government issuers in real time.

To access documents in their DigiLocker account, individuals must authenticate themselves using Aadhaar Biometric (fingerprint or iris scan) or Mobile OTP. Biometric authentication is the most secure method - eliminating risks of OTP interception or SIM-swap fraud. What is DigiLocker and how does biometric authentication work with it?

DigiLocker is a cloud-based document wallet launched by MeitY under Digital India. Citizens store and access official documents linked to their Aadhaar. Biometric authentication (via a UIDAI-approved fingerprint or iris scanner) provides the most secure sign-in - verifying identity through encrypted UIDAI authentication before granting document access.

Are DigiLocker documents legally valid?

Yes. DigiLocker documents are legally equivalent to original physical documents under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Driving licences, RC books, Aadhaar, PAN, mark sheets and insurance policies issued through DigiLocker are accepted by government departments, courts and institutions across India.

Why use biometric authentication instead of OTP for DigiLocker?
